The War Canoe(120)

The Natural History Museum is not only mentioned in the Catcher in the Rye but is a setting Holden visits while on a trip for nostalgia. But he, at first, is looking for Phoebe and finds someone that says she is at the museum, which she realizes after telling Holden that she in fact isn’t there at all. Regardless of whether Phoebe is there, it is on his brain and he has nothing better to do so he takes a trip to it.

This was a favorite place of Holden’s as a kid so coming back and having it all be in the same place really puts his life in perspective. This displays show how much his life has changed since he was last there. He showed this in the text when he says ”The best thing, though, in that museum

Squaw

"The squaw that was weaving the blanket"(121)

was that everything always stayed right where it was. Nobody’d move. . . . Nobody’d be different. The only thing that would be different would be you. Not that you’d be so much older or anything. It wouldn’t be that exactly. You’d just be different, that’s all.”(121). This displays he could never deem phony because he loved them in his innocent youth and nothing has changed about them. This is a similar idea to Jane Gallagher, he really liked her as a kid and he hasn’t talked to her since to see if she has changed, this might be why he is never in the mood to talk to her, because he doesn’t want to realize that she is now a phony.

He wants to be one of those scenes in the Natural History Museum, it is simple and never changing. He would never have to interact with phonies just look at the children visiting the museum like he once did. This is also like his fantasy of watching the kids play in the rye field and protecting them from not falling off the cliff, simple not having to worry about anything else but that.
